A Composer’s Journey
In my early training as a performing musician, it never occurred to me that I might one day pursue composing earnestly, although as a youth I made many arrangements of pieces, including Jerome Kern’s “All the Things You Are”, and what was then the Girl Scout theme song. My first serious attempt, a modern setting of the Kyrie, was written in the early 1980s for Calvary-St. Andrew’s Church in Rochester, New York.
In subsequent years, necessity and inspiration together have provided numerous opportunities to compose for choir and/or congregation, including anthems, descants, and service music. A specialty of mine has also been creating transcriptions for solo organ of several instrumental works by J. S. Bach, Clara Schumann, Antonio Vivaldi and others, which I have used in my concert repertoire over the years.
The demands of a high-profile, triparte career in church music, solo concerts, and teaching combined with single parenthood means that only now are these works — each written for a particular circumstance — becoming available to the public for the first time.
Lupine Editions was started in 2018 to meet the requests made by many to share my music, and this online store was built in 2023-2024. The name is inspired both from the beautiful flower which graces New Hampshire landscapes, and a beloved pet cat, Professor Lupin. The logo artwork depicting Lupin with a Lupine is by the marvelous New Hampshire artist Tatiana Whiting. May these compositions inspire you, your choirs and congregations, and audiences alike.
